In what may be considered part of the normal procedure for observance during elections, the security forces of the Philippines have issued all round instructions that the
airspace above the various national centers for canvassing remain a no-fly zone for the duration of the elections.
These centers are located in Metro Manila.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Philippines had received instructions from Comelec, the Commission on Elections; this was disclosed by the Armed
Forces of the Philippines in a press release that defined the areas over which these restrictions apply.
These areas which were notified by the government as No-Fly zones on May 9th, the day of the Presidential Elections, are as follows:
- Intramuros in Manila,
- The Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, and
- The House of Representatives in Batasan Hills, Quezon City.
It is customary for these No-Fly zones to be defined by the Election Authorities prior to all elections and other important functions.
These orders are applicable to all the rotary aircraft’s, Drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles that do not require any clearance from the Civil Aviation
Authority of the Philippines (CAAP); through this notification strict instructions are issued through gazette notifications and through the popular media.
Even the implementation factor is quite strict with the authorities who maintain a close vigil in a state of alert.
The Armed Forces Police and the units of the Philippine National Police had been deputed to ensure that the orders to enforce the NO-fly zone were strictly
implemented; it was also notified that the enforcement squads had orders to shoot down any aerial vehicles that were violating the airspace in the notified areas.
This would also apply to all denominations of Drones and unidentified flying objects that were seen as a threat during election time.
